You’ve done it, you’re through to the last stage of the application! Congratulations, you have beaten out hundreds of people for this opportunity. Enjoy it.

* EVERYTHING I HAVE WRITTEN IS MY ADVICE AND IS NOT IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE BBC *

What is an assessment centre and where does it take place?

An assessment centre is a face to face interview with staff at the BBC. You could attend this interview at any of the BBC bases in England. These are Bristol, Birmingham, London and Salford in Manchester. The location of your email will be clearly stated in your email invitation.

How long will it last?

From my personal experience, all interviewees had to arrive at 10:15am. I would strongly recommend you arrive up to 15 minutes early to allow time to check in and meet the other applicants. The interview will probably last around six and half hours, so make a buddy or two. Due to long interview days, the BBC will likely arrange refreshments, including lunch. If you have any dietary requirements, make sure to email the team. Food will help you perform your best, so fuel up.

What happens at an assessment centre?

  • Two Group Exercises – They are likely to be looking for great communicators who love working in a team. Share your creativity, perhaps by pitching some ideas to your group.

  • Face to Face Interview – Sell yourself, this is your chance to tell the BBC why you are perfect for this scheme.

How to prepare

  • Get to know yourself - What are your key strengths that you can offer, double points if you can link this to a situation you can share. Make sure you can explain why you want this job and why it is so important to you.

  • Plan your journey – In my experience, key times were stated in the invitation email. Just in case, make sure you book a train after this time. You don’t want to be worrying about missing your train home if the interview runs over.

What should I wear?

You need to look professional, smart and tidy. Although, the media industry often has a relaxed dress code, so don’t go too overboard you might stand out like an odd thumb. Gents, I’d go with a shirt with trousers and work shoes. Ladies, either an office appropriate dress, smart top and skirt or trousers with flats or a small heel. (I’d suggest flats, unless you know you can walk well in heels!) For everyone, no jeans or trainers. It is an interview after all.

RESULT TIME – When do I find out if I’m on the scheme?

I took part in the assessment centre on the 5th June. After, weeks of anticipation I found out on the 24th July. Be warned, they might still invite you to a final interview with the specific production area you are being considered for. Unfortunately, I do not have any advice on this stage as I didn’t attend one.

GOOD LUCK GUYS!! You’re sooooo close to working for one of the world’s biggest media companies. You’ve got this!
